Topics covered will include: exploring genetics, eating attitudes, food and fitness behaviors, and environmental and practical tips for making positive and fun dietary changes! In addition, there will be a focus on achieving and maintaining a healthy productive life for individuals and families at all ages. This course presents details on the science behind super foods, revealing how food can increase your overall performance. Course 2: Weight Management and Nutrition in the Lifecycle

Applying the principles of good nutrition starts at Day 1, whether working with clients or designing a personal healthy eating program. This course teaches students the principles behind helping a client in any stage of their lifecycle to set and achieve weight goals while working in conjunction with a registered dietitian in a team approach. Certificate Format

The certificate program’s required four core courses have been designed to be completed in as little as three months or students have up to one year if necessary.

The On-line Certificate program format has been designed to be taken in two consecutive modules. Students may elect to enroll in courses one at a time, as they are offered. Students are provided with 8 weeks of access per course.
Courses are offered in an OPEN ENROLLMENT format, meaning students can register and begin courses at any time.

Certificate Format

The following National Organizations/Associations have approved each Functional Nutrition course for Continuing Education Credits/Units (CECs/CEUs):

  • National Posture Institute (NPI) / 5 CECs
  • American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) / 20 CECs
  • International Sports Science Association (ISSA) / 10 CECs
  • American Senior Fitness Association (SFA) / 2.0 CEUs
  • National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF) / 10 CEUs
  • Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) has approved the
  • Certificate in Functional Nutrition program for 60 Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEUs)/ or 30 (CPEUs) per each individual course taken separately for both the Registered Dietitian (RDs) and Dietetic Technician-Registered (DTRs).

The following National Organizations/Associations have approved each Sports Nutrition course for Continuing Education Credits/Units (CECs/CEUs):

The Online Professional College Certificate in Family Nutrition has been designed to meet the growing demand for Registered Dietitians, DTRs, allied health/medical and fitness professionals, parents, and the general public who want to learn to develop healthy food strategies, family support education,  and advanced  nutritional planning for moms, children, and the entire family. This Web-based Certificate program provides an in-depth examination of developing nutritionally fit, fun, and energized families through foods and proper nutrition!  In addition, learn “Healthy Habit Strategies” to cope with family dynamics and the different environments each member of the family lives in.

Course 1:  Healthy Moms and Infant Nutrition

Navigating through evidence-based research, this course will explore important nutritional recommendations for preconception, pregnancy, and infant and toddler feeding. In addition, it will also address food planning strategies for families (healthy meal and snack ideas, exercise, and family support) to embrace healthy living and eating post-delivery. This course will debunk many common myths and provide a basic understanding of the most current maternal and child nutrition recommendations. Learn why early nutrition is the key to preventing childhood obesity and obesity later in life, as well as where to find excellent books and online resources for deeper exploration of topics of interest.

Course 2: Healthy Children Nutrition:  At the Home, Work and External Environments

This course is designed for professionals and parents concerned and interested in expanding their nutrition knowledge. Utilizing evidence-based research, explore the role and impact of three predominant nutrition environments that affect a child’s food choices: the home, the school, and the external environment. Topics covered include: navigating the fast food jungle, addressing media and marketing to children, identifying the connection between nutrition and school performance and behavior, exploring successful parental feeding behaviors, and general strategies for childhood overweight and obesity prevention.

This course provides background on government nutrition programs for children, and the political and budget constraints that have hindered advancement in nutritional science. It also provides knowledge about the foods served at school and why vending machines and junk foods have become staples at many schools. Finally, the course looks at the parental, community, marketing, and school-based influences on childhood nutrition.

Course 2:  Developing School Wellness – Children Nutritional Programs

Instructor: Melissa Halas-Liang, MA RD CDE

This course will look at the changing food environment in the U.S., including Mrs. Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, changes in the school lunch program, and examines school gardens as well as the organic and green movement. It will discuss the three steps to successful nutrition education and ideas for incorporating nutrition and fitness education into the school day. It will ask participants to think creatively about the best ways to reach kids through positive food, fitness and health behaviors!

This format allows students to complete the courses at their own pace and without specific assignment due dates. With Open Enrollment, register whenever you like. Once logged into the course, you have eight (8) full weeks to complete all the required coursework in a given course.
